Postcard From Rome
Ciao Di,
It is spring in lovely Rome and the Via Condotti is adorned with hanging baskets of brilliant fuschia petunias. First stop from from the Via del Corso is Max & Co. There are pretty summer linen dresses and skirts in bands of mustard, brown and purple worn with chocolate leather sandals and teamed with a fabulous mustard canvas bag with chocolate leather trim. On the racks behind the window display I can see 70's orange trimmed with chocolate. Some how it works.
Next door is Dolce & Gabbana. The handpainted dresses we have seen in all the current magazines are on display. These are chocolate brown worn with tourquoise leather belts. In the second window is a divine party dress in caramel organza.
Trussardi has a gorgeous tobacco coloured halter dress with pleats in front. It is worn with a leather gilet - very safari - something you imagine Grace Kelly might have worn.
One of my favourite designers is Alberta Ferretti. She doesn't disappoint this season. I love the eau de nil silk jersey grecian evening dress and the abstract print with the fabulous jewels, looking like vintage diamonte brooches adorning one shoulder. Hermes has been inspired by Tibet and the windows are strewn with pink and red flowers reminiscent of banks of flowers floating down the Ganges. The clothes have ethnic tassels and fringing - very exotic.
Max Mara is filled with all the things Italian women (and others) will want to wear this summer. There are deceptively simple dresses, separates and knits in purple & cream, tobacco & cream, red & white and brown & white. I love the muted gold oversize bags. Salvatore Ferragamo has a brilliant orange sheer silk blouse with a long skirt of the same colour. The orange croc bag should be mine. I suspect it is real croc so I don't dare ask the price.
Armani does subtle colour so well. Today there is an oyster jacket with suggested animal print pants and an ivory croc clutch. In the next window is a snake skin jacket with knee length shorts in putty, worn with tribal jewellery. For summer evenings there is cream lace combined with an animal print silk sash at the hip and a feathered skirt.
La Perla does the best swimwear. For those blessed with a perfect figure there is a divine mustard bikini and the ultimate black one piece.
Prada has a gorgeous black evening dress covered with irregular frills that I have seen in no other Prada store. The next window has the same in cream. There are crinkle patent bags in purple, mocha and chocolate. I would like one of each.
It is time for a coffee at Cafe Greco and a stop on the Spanish steps to watch the fascinating Italian passegiata.
