Trend Report
The HOT TRENDS for Winter 07/08 are:
FORTIES, PUNK, BIKER GIRL, CHUNKY KNITS, EQUESTRIAN, NAVAL, THE NEW BLAZER (Boys Club)…
1. FORTIES. A womanly era is here with proper hair and make-up. Veronika Lake meets leather gauntlets. A return to elegance - polite, grown-up, impeccable tailoring; a sharp, sexy silhouette in suits and feminine floor length gowns. The bow blouse is big, not prim - to be worn with a skinny skirt or slouchy man-style pants. Trousers will be narrow for under capes and coats, or full pleated man-style - the latter needs a soft bow blouse and chunky heels.
The Waist – cinch in the volume with a waist belt. Cut a strong shape. This season’s body hot spot is the waist.
An elegant dress – glamorous long gown. Also forties inspired is the skirt suit, yes, back this season is a skirt with its own jacket. Skirts are fuller and jackets really define the waistline – very womanly... some are calling it the Hourglass… looks fabulous with tights and high Oxford brogues. Ralph Lauren, Bottega Veneta, Valentino and Proenza Schouler have shown the best.
2. MODERN. A return to clean timeless classics, modernist labels, grown-up wearable clothes.
3. TEXTURE. Surface interest is now captivating.
4. COLOUR. It’s a block colour thing in bold hues of orange, green and lots of pink. What might have looked scary a few seasons ago now looks mighty desirable. High voltage hues sure won’t work for the faint hearted. Black, grey and purple will be popular with a lot of designers. Silver now for day or night - has that high-beam effect in simple shapes.
5. SHOES and BOOTS. Kinky boots, vampish buckles - patent black belts and a dominatrix frame of mind. You’re the ultimate urban warrior The ankle boot is No. 1 in boots and then tall heeled brogues or ladylike courts balance well with the Forties suits.
6. Nu-Tec. This is where the future thinking fashion houses PRADA and Miu Miu are using complex threads and fabrics to create something completely out of this world. Unexpected materials, hard edged with embellishment makes this look tough but interesting. Prada and Fendi, among others, have shown feathers, fur and fringe in exaggerated opulence.
7. Boho-Tec. Part Bohemian, part hi tech - it’s a look that should clash, but ends up looking truly unique.
8. VOLUME. This is going to be big news – huge, massive. We’re talking voluminous sleeves at Lanvin; gargantuan coats at YSL; and evening wear at Dior. When wearing volume on top, wear with slim narrow bottom. CHUNKY KNITS – keep the volume to the top and do as sweater or coat over a narrow shape underneath.
9. BIKER GIRL. Leather – reinvented in everything. Leather in dresses, skater’s skirts, coats and jackets.
10. THE NEW BLAZER. (The BOYS CLUB) Crisp cotton shirts worn under Blazers. Slim, sharp tuxedos return. Trim tailoring in coats, jackets, blazers and dresses.
11. COATS. From voluminous to slim fitting, coats make a major statement for Winter 07/08. Primary colours like those at Donna Karan, Versace and Dior. SWINGY CAPES look wonderful over a skinny dress or narrow pants - Zac Posen (New York) and Jill Sander showed them in brights over skinny bottoms and high ankle boots.
