POSTCARD from Colette Hunt in Hong Kong for Spring Summer 2012

Gong Xi Fa Cai dear Di,

May the incoming Chinese New Year of the Dragon bring only good things for you and yours.

I was fortunate to be again in my favourite Hong Kong having just been there for Christmas. The weather cold and bleak, but expected at this time of the year. The sales were already on when I was there a few weeks ago, but this visit they were temptingly down to ‘final reduction!’. I did well with my purchases ; now will have to wait for winter somewhere in the world to enjoy wearing them.

For the first time though, I was surprised to see that most of the designer boutiques were already showing their Spring/Summer fashions.  This usually doesn’t happen until the celebrations are over. New year..new season fashion.

Such an unusual combination of colours on display . Corals, orange, rust and various shades of peach were teamed with navy, yellow and tan. Lavender also put with yellow…not for everyone.

The real surprise for me was Burberry. Fresh, eclectic styles and colors, a complete departure from their usual designs.. Bold tribal prints, crochet, and lots of wood and bead detailing on clothes and especially shoes. Fabulous wedges that you I know would adore.

Divine bags…bright colors, big and slouchy.

Valentino ..exquisite. The brand, even without the maestro at the helm is in absolutely no danger of losing its premier position in fashion. Spring/summer is an effortless balance between the Valentino fantasy of decades past and yet keeping it beautifully accessible to the modern woman. The lacework, beading and accessories were pieces of art.

Of the younger brands, Blugirl, under the Blumarine/Anna Molinari umbrella was so so pretty and feminine. Delicious colors and fabrics with whimsical prints and of beautiful quality.

Hong Kong had all its best party lights on for the new year, the city so bustling, alive and exciting.  An amazing time  to be there...think we should go together next year ?

Zaijian,

Colette
